TBD Tuesday Tumblers

I have been wanting to get better at regular blog posts... It looks like today is as good as any to begin!

Maybe you've seen a tumbler or two pop up in my Instagram feed. What is going on? Well, I decided that I needed to do something to get myself posting work consistently, and since the tumblers are what got the clay ball rolling again... it felt like a good fit!

Each Tuesday you will find a unique tumbler (or set) posted in the shop... when it is gone... it is gone! I really like it when people pick up my tumblers and find the one that seems to fit them. There is something tangible about the connection of my hands to theirs. The goal of TBD Tuesday Tumblers is to try and translate that to an online experience (not an easy task). I think that is one of the things that has limited my online productivity... It is hard to get all the senses involved, and to feel that connection. My hope is that these transactions happen off of some spark that occurs when you see a certain tumbler. For that reason I am willing to post experiments, and accidents... things that might not appeal to everyone, but may speak to someone. So far the response has been amazing, and so much fun... Thank you!

Follow along every Tuesday on Facebook, or Instagram... or check in on the site to see if a tumbler sparks YOUR interest!

Coming Back Around...

I am welcoming in 2016 by looking back... way back to my college days (Graceland University). Specifically the days working in the ceramics studio. I created a small body of work that leaned against the idea that as a "potter/ceramicist" I was destined to make mugs and teapots. I didn't see anything wrong with creating this type of work, but I didn't like it to be assumed that this is who I was as an artist. So the worked referenced functional ceramic pieces, and had a metallic/machine fabrication aesthetic. I had big ideas for this work and where I would take it... However, I didn't really understand how to tackle these ideas, in order to make the body of work a reality. I got overwhelmed, and the ideas sat on the shelf.

Tea Pot Jams, made circa 2000

Fast forward to about this time last year (yes, fast forward... backwards)... I had been getting my hands back in clay. As I dipped my toes (well, fingers) back in the clay... I found myself leaning towards making simple tumblers. These items were something to use, and compliment my life in coffee. I had never seen my skill set matching up very well with those of a "production" potter, but there was something intriguing about tackling that notion... and turning it on its head.

Then, out of the blue... I was asked if I, "could make custom ceramic growlers". I had never thought about such a thing, and had no idea how to go about fulfilling that request... so I said, "yes, I think I can do that". I had also just recently made a challenge to myself to "try and fail" at as many things as possible. This meant, instead of shying away from things that I thought I could not do, or might not be good at... that I would GO FOR IT!!!

So... in the last few hours of 2015... I delivered growlers number: 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 (out of 250 to be made). All were sold before the doors to Mare Island Brewing Co. was even open for business (and there was still a line of people who would have to wait for the next batch). The reason I write this post now, is to highlight the fact that these growlers are tied to that work from long ago. The work I was doing then is present now, both in aesthetic and concept. I had to lean into what I bucked against as a young college student... just now am I learning how to be myself. Letting the work flow out of me, and not simply just pushing against the box that others (or myself) might want to put me in. I can now look back at the patterns of my life, and see that the things people now often say that I am "good at"... are all things I was quite sure I could never excel at. What a wonderful thing it is to be proved wrong... and learn something new!

Ready…

Not long after the loss of my Father I had a song pour out on to the pages of my journal… it was the type of writing that I didn't think about, craft or compose. It just flowed out, and I captured what was being carried in my heart. I closed the journal after writing it, and didn't look at it again for a very long time. It crossed my mind every once in a while, and I would even think about pulling it out to see if the music was ready to emerge. However, it was always too raw… to hot to hold in my hands, and more pain than my heart was willing to expose.

This past Father's Day, exactly 11 years since saying goodbye to my dad for last time… I was ready to open that journal. I recognized a new feeling on my path of grief. I felt a strength and connection to my grief as part of my journey, but not the definition of who I am. I was ready to sing, and be free. Free from the locked room of my own hurt, and ready to open myself to the beautiful world of joy (and pain) that exists for our open hearts.

I share this rough video as a sign post on my road, and look forward to the directions it points me.

MedicineBow in Napa

MedicineBow @ Medicine Bow
Happy New Year to everyone… I am excited that the new year will be starting off with plenty of music for me! MedicineBow (the name for my current music adventures) has two nights in Napa during January, and starting to set things up for beyond! I will be playing at The Black and White Center (in the Slack Collective) on the 4th (Sunday), and 24th (Saturday). For both of these shows I will be sharing the stage with a handful of other wonderful musicians! You can get tickets from me (while they last… I only get a few), or at the door!

Silent Night and Holiday Hype

Another holiday season is ramping up towards the frenzied, shop-til-ya-drop, crash into the new year, and hope we all survive it… season we know and love (sorta). I often feel very anxious this time of year as a "creative business person", because I sense the need to "take advantage" of the opportunity to sell. I am admittedly not very good at this part, and I can get stuck beating myself up for not being better. So today, I am taking a time out. To simply enjoy the love I have for creating.
Last year I recorded a simple version of the song Silent Night that I have been singing for a few years. Perhaps you can use it as back ground for your own time out. This is a season of darkness, and the opportunity for quiet reflection. Winter is getting ready to settle in, and hold our deeper thoughts. There are things to hold ourselves accountable/responsible for, and there are the gifts we can give ourselves (and others) of being loving, gentle… letting go. I have much to be grateful in this season. Today I am going to sit and soak that gratitude up. I am going to do what I can in my studio, and share as much of it as possible… whether it is during this holiday season, or perhaps in the new year.
It is my hope you find your own space of quiet reflection during the hustle and bustle of this season… and that what ever lights you up, you find more of in the new year!

Whispers of Wild Noise

Occasionally in life there are events where everything in our fragmented day to day, intersects…  a focus where the world appears crystal clear, and all the blur melts away. It is in these moments where we catch a glimpse of how it all connects. In these spaces we feel perfect with all the crazy imperfections we normally run from. When we breath in this air… we understand our tangled breath as the beautiful weaving of everything.

Last year at this time I stumbled into one of these moments. It was called Wild Noise. I spent these days in the magic shadows of the Santa Cruz redwoods… creating, singing, playing, eating (delicious food), growing. It was this week that I received my mastered tracks back for my first CD (Bag of Simple), reconnected to art that lights me up (Andy Goldsworthy), talked permaculture/used tools from Ecology of Leadership, and caught a glimpse of all of these things making up who I am.

Sadly… Wild Noise will not be happening this year. We couldn't inspire enough people to carve out this space in their life. Why is that? How do we invite people to find these gifts in their lives? I do not know the answer to these questions, but perhaps this is how Wild Noise is providing me focus this year… by giving me questions to be curious about, and the challenge of creating/manifesting what is important in my life.

Coffee & Slow Living Radio

I was recently invited to be a guest on Slow Living Radio, and talk about my experience traveling with Ritual Coffee Roasters down to Honduras. One of the hosts, Sally James, is a long time customer at our store in Napa (in the Oxbow Public Market), and asked me to come share about my experience visiting several of the farms that we source coffee from.

It was a great time to reflect a bit on how amazing this trip was, and what a special relationship we get to have with our producers at Ritual. I talked about picking coffee cherries at Los Manos, and about how the cherries are processed. I tried my best to convey the impact that this beautiful journey had in my work life, and beyond.

We rarely get to track the things that we consume back to the source. To touch that land, the process and to share with those people… is unique, and powerful. So many images stick in my mind, as well as all the laughs that I shared with my co-workers/friends.

Life feels like it is unfolding… and I am finally catching glimpses of how it is all connected. TreeBed Design is rooted in all of these connections, and I am excited to watch as it pushes up through the soil to see the light of these days.

Music, Myth & More...

Much of my creative energy the past year has gone into clearing old projects out of my way... either by finishing them off ("perfect" or not), or letting go of them. One of these projects was a CD collaboration that Chad Elliott and I started back in 2005. As a part of re-familiarizing myself with my recording software this winter, I remixed these 5 songs... and with the help of my Ritual co-worker Alec Ness (mastering)... have released this group of songs as an EP!

These songs speak to a very specific time in my life, and capture a part of my journey that naturally extends into my current project Bag of Simple. My hope is that these songs connect with someone on their journey, and fit for them in some meaningful way. It was certainly powerful for me to revisit these songs, as well as see how I have changed since recording them. I am so grateful for Chad's patience in working with me on this project, and for putting a great deal of enthusiasm, trust, and joy into recording these songs... as well as the support given during my current project!

Spring is Rumbling...

We are well into Spring, and I can certainly feel it rumbling under the surface of my life! So much preparation for the seeds planted (some, so long ago)... ready to burst forth. I wonder if seeds feel as uncomfortable with this process as I do right now. Is a seed prepared for the massive shifts and changes that unfold as it pushes new life out into the world? Perhaps there are days leading up to this emerging when seeds say, "not today... I am just not ready for all of this change".

Or... is it possible that the seed simply lets the world unfold from within... soaking up all that life has to offer, and returning the gift by being a unique part of that unfolding. I doubt the seed has a "worrying mind"... or voices whispering judgements, negativity and self doubt. For some reason, I do.

However, I have some choosing in the matter, and as this Spring (and I) unfold... I want to choose to remain in my curiosity about this unfolding. I want to pay attention, and soak up this beautiful life that surrounds me. I might not even recognize this new world that I am emerging into... What a gift! Will it recognize me? How will this new world I am emerging into, gently weave me into a unique space within it's amazingly complex web? How will I choose to honor and show gratitude for this process? Today I will do my best to choose these questions... over the "questioning" of my talents, skills, patterns and abilities. Today I choose to intentionally push into the light of my hopes and dreams (and loving).

I have been working hard in the garden... it is time to see what comes next.

House Concerts

Tonight there will be a house concert at the Hammock Hostel (my house), and I decided it was a good time to sit down and reflect about why I enjoy hosting something like this. If you have never been to a house concert... you might be scratching your head as to what it is. I believe the first house concert that I attended was many years ago in Portland, with Chris Cunningham of Storyhill. After that my friend (and talented musician/artist) Chad Elliott further introduced me to the idea of an intimate concert in a living room (or backyard, or anywhere fun!). Since that time I have attended, played, and hosted many wonderful house concerts. I even joined a website called Concerts In Your Home dedicated to connecting folks who want to host house concerts with musicians looking to play!

This evening a wonderful artist, Emma Hill will be performing for friends in my living room (there is still some room if you want to come!). The focus will be on listening and connecting with an artist sharing their music... as well as providing an opportunity for people to connect as community. No matter how nervous I get about... how many people will show, or if everything will be set up right... it always turns out great! Why? Because at the core of an event like this, the intention is to share something authentic. Yes, there needs to be donations so that the musician can keep driving down the road (and pay a few bills), and work to make it all go smoothly. However, it is not about over priced tickets for lots of advertising, bells and whistles, and greed that often gets in the way of people gathering to enjoy a performance. For this reason, both the artist and the guest are taken care of (and usually have a lot of fun).

As I get my musical endeavors moving forward (in the process of recording right now)... I am hoping to play mostly house concerts and share my music in this way. If you would like to host a house concert, with me (or other artists), check out the great resources on Concerts In Your Home, and get in touch!

30 Items in Etsy... Olive Oil Set

A while back I made it a goal to keep 30 items in my Etsy Shop. That was during the holiday season when the work was disappearing at the same time it was being added. I have been quietly working on some fun items over the Spring, and organizing older pieces... it is time to tackle that goal of 30!

Today's additions include one of my favorite collaboration pieces, an olive oil set made with the help of Chad Elliott. We played with a few designs, and cranked out quite a few of these. There are a hand full left after a few years of selling (and becoming one of my favorite wedding gifts). Bring a set to your table before they are gone!

... Where was I?

Yes... it has been awhile since I have put attention towards blogging, or anything else related to TreeBed Design. Aside from a little Etsy energy... TreeBed Design has been pulling in nutrients, and preparing to leaf out during the Spring!

Keep an eye out for more blog posts... and lots of fun things happening in the branches of TreeBed Design. For example, there will be a house concert at the Hammac Hostel (south) on Feb. 25th. The Hostel joined Concerts In Your Home last fall and has already hosted one concert with Carrie Clark, and is excited to host Emma Hill on the 25th. If you are interested in the concert series email me for more info, and you may end up hearing lovely music like this...

Remembering (again)...

As I have listened to the September 11th anniversary coverage the past week, I have been deeply connected to the stories. I have been thinking about my own story... Walking into the Graceland University library to use a computer, and seeing the image of the World Trade Center burning on TV. "What a bizarre accident..." I thought to myself. Later I sat alone in the Iowa shack I was renting, and cried as I watched the horrific story unfold on the news. There was nothing sensational or overblown about the coverage... it was a pure scrambling and grasping for answers about what was happening. My heart grew heavy with the weight of the events, and more so for the implications for the future. Hate, fear, grief, struggle, war, revenge, pain, blood, suspicion, divisiveness... I heard a distinct voice from inside that said, "time to step up to the plate". Someone would need to meet the extremes of these difficult times with the same force of energy that carried out these attacks, and all the reverberations of horror it would unleash. A retaliation of love, hope, peace, joy, acceptance, forgiveness, understanding, healing...

On the first anniversary of the attacks, I was ready. Our collective response had already dissolved from the unified shock and vulnerability that brought us together as a community. Fear was now dividing us, fraying our shared pain into weapons of sorrow. I challenged my community (anyone who's e-mail address I had) to take a different kind of remembrance... to respond by planting a tree. A political response and action to support beautiful life in the face of our destructive times (I had read E.F. Schumacher's Small is Beautiful earlier that year). I was putting myself out there, learning, planning... working towards better times.

I am writing this now, because I have lost that energy. On the 10th anniversary of an event that changed me (and so much else), I am feeling trapped under the weight of this undertaking... to create a loving response to our broken world.

Why is this a post in my design blog? Finding the energy to move forward, to heal, to grow a beautiful world to be a part of... will take intention. We will need to rely on, and use the tools that we have gathered, the lessons we have learned (often through pain), the knowledge passed down from our ancestors. All of the systems and spaces we are a part of were designed by people just like us... and in many cases there are better designs out there if we choose. We designed our own internal systems for dealing (and coping) with our life experience... nobody is going to fix us. We must do that for ourselves (often with help from others), and if we do... perhaps we will find the energy to stand up for better design in our communities, nation and world.

This is what I want TreeBed Design to be about... working toward "regenerative design" for ourselves and the world we are a part of. My first step will be taking a course that has been on my mind for a number of years called Ecology of Leadership. I hope to use this time (and space of learning) to regain energy and focus for my own path.

This is a path that I hope to share, and by writing this down... I am creating the first steps of intention. It is true that "we must always remember" the major events that create the grief we carry, but it is what we choose as actions that will reflect how we honor those memories. And so I will begin... again.

Spring is... Over!

Remember when I was going to have a "big" push of stuff for Spring... well, sometimes things don't go according to plan. Spring has come and gone, and I have barely been in the studio or able to work on Etsy. world (or any other world of mine). What have I been up to? Work. Lots of making coffee and selling of spices. Sometimes thats how it goes. However, I do plan on getting some energy put into TreeBed Design soon!

Stay tuned...

Spring... is close!

I am planning on a big Spring roll out... so lots of new activity in the TreeBed Design Shop... and on Etsy starting March 20th... the first day of Spring!

Details coming soon... Have a happy St. Patrick's Day (what ever that means)!

Baggage.

Sometimes the thing that keeps us from an efficient (and healthy) process... is our own baggage. We accumulate all sorts of mental "stuff" (good and bad), and it can often get in the way of using our full energy to accomplish goals. There are ideas or ways of doing things that may have been useful to us in the past... and now, those things might be road blocks to progress. Have you looked at your baggage lately to see if you still need it? Everyone carries their baggage in unique ways, and we all sift through it differently as well. I have decided to donate some older bags to the birds.
